Spreading the Word
Communication can be a challenge in a congregation as large and active as ours. We work very hard to communicate with one another in a variety of structured and informal ways, but we freely acknowledge that all of our efforts remain works in progress as we try to keep members 100 percent informed of all the exciting happenings at our church!
As we strive to reduce our carbon footprint, we’ve increasingly turned to online ways to reach out to our members. Our monthly newsletter is published electronically and sent by email to all members; paper copies are available in the church office, at the Welcome Table on Sundays, and by request will be mailed out to members who are not able to access an email account. The newsletter features monthly communications from our Minister, our Faith Development Director, our Music Director, and the Board of Trustees. Other articles may appear as-needed and as space allows.
The Religious Education program has a weekly newsletter with information relevant to families with children enrolled in the program, which is printed for distribution to parents on Sunday morning.
Weekly Friday electronic mailings (E-blast) contain church news items, events and reminders in a format sorted by proximity -- This Sunday, This Weekend, Coming Up This Week, Classes and Opportunities, and Mark Your Calendar for events in the more distant future.
Supplemental electronic notices are sent as necessary, but rarely.
There is also an Announcements Insert in the Order of Service, much of it duplicating (reinforcing) information from the Friday e-mail in a printed format. These are also available in a large-print format.
Official notices for Congregational Meetings are still sent through US mail, but a by-laws revision is being made to allow for electronic notification for those individuals who agree to participate that way.
We have an FM transmission system for hearing assistance in the Sanctuary, and speakers to broadcast the service into the Parish Hall and the Women's Society Lounge.
There is a Joys and Concerns table in the Sanctuary for congregants who may light a candle and request mention during the Pastoral Prayer. Members can also request a private consultation with the minister or a visit from a member of the caring team.
There are message boards at each entrance that detail the schedules and sites for meetings. Brochures and other literature are available at the Welcome Table on Sundays.
Of course, there is coffee and conversation after every service and the Parish Hall is the gathering place for discussion and our "Town Square" for groups and special events.
The UUCB website is maintained by a dedicated webmaster and assistants who are members of the church.
We have a central Facebook, link below, and a larger presence on Facebook with pages for several groups.
